Well you heard me right, this week I actually have a harvest. It's small but it's something and there's more where this came from. The eggplants are so beautiful and the peppers are extra sweet.
In addition the carrots and broccoli I started are coming along nicely.
The cosmos in the drive have not begun to bloom yet, but continue to get taller and taller. The anticipation of what color they will be is killing me!
I am so jealous of your eggplant! Mine stayed too long in flats, then stayed too long in the shade of some gargantuan cucumbers and bell peppers. I hope they can do something this season!

ReplyDeleteWe live in Dupont, close to the intersection of San Jose Bv and St. Augustine Rd. Where are you guys at? I am waiting, waiting for my spuds on my window sill (reds) to DO something so that I can plant them. I've got 55 gal barrels cut in half to plant them in. I have GOT to try the broccoli. Any pests here that I should look out for?

Congratulations on your harvest! Your eggplant looks great. How did you cook this beauty? And those carrots in your bucket(?), are they going to be full-sized carrots? How tall is your bucket? I tried growing some carrots in my 6-inch deep SFG beds this spring/summer, and they really didn't grow much at all. The same seeds I sowed in the ground in my mom's garden got ginormous. So I'm wondering if carrots really prefer to be in the ground, or if it was one (or more) of many other variables (weather, location, watering, etc.) that contributed to the difference.

ReplyDeletethyme2garden - I made some awesome eggplant lasagna and gave the others away. I actually don't like eggplant that much. And the bucket is about a foot deep. I planted danver's half longs. I think the key is that the soil needs to be old, sandy and really broken down. Fresh potting mix has too many chunks in it that inhibit the carrots growth. Also important to remember they are a cold weather crop. These will likely not mature until mid November.
"old, sandy and really broken down" is exactly how my mom's CA garden soil is, although I always just thought of it as "really sandy." And I just harvested the biggest carrots I've ever seen from her soil, and they grew out of the exact same seeds that gave me matchstick carrots in my Indiana garden. I will have to remember this for my next carrot project!
